Urgent Campaign — Albania

Animals are being poisoned by design. We’re demanding it stops.

This is Unacceptable

For years, hundreds of dogs and cats have been poisoned across Albania every year, often at night, often right before tourist season. Most criminal complaints go nowhere. We’re asking Albania’s authorities to act, and we need your name on this.

The pattern

This isn’t isolated cruelty. It’s a pattern.

Across Albania, stray and owned animals are being deliberately poisoned with toxic substances left in public spaces. It happens during nighttime hours. It happens repeatedly. And it tends to intensify right before the tourist season, raising serious questions about coordination, and about who is allowing it to continue.

Since 2023, Animals Need Me has formally submitted multiple criminal complaints to the relevant authorities. The response has been near silence: most cases dismissed, no real investigations carried out, no one held accountable.

That lack of enforcement isn’t a paperwork issue. It tells everyone, including the people doing the poisoning, that nothing will happen if they keep doing it. A coordinated national response is no longer optional. It’s overdue.

Who Pays The Price

Everyone loses when poison is the policy.

This isn’t only an animal welfare issue. It reaches into homes, schools, ecosystems, and Albania’s reputation abroad.

Our Demands

Five things Albania’s authorities must do now.

We’re not asking for new laws. We’re asking for the ones already on the books to be enforced.

To: All 61 Municipalities

Replace poisoning with humane policy

Adopt science-based stray management built on sterilization, vaccination, and identification, with poisoning and inhumane methods explicitly banned and sanctioned.

01

To: Law Enforcement & Judiciary

Investigate every case, prosecute every offender

Every report deserves a prompt, thorough, independent investigation. Dismissed cases with unreviewed evidence should be reopened, and offenders should be prosecuted under existing law.

02

To: Municipal Oversight Bodies

Hold municipal authorities accountable

Investigate credible allegations of municipal involvement or negligence, and establish real oversight and transparency over how these incidents are handled and reported.

03

To: Ministry of Agriculture & Ministry of Justice

Coordinate across ministries

Investigate credible allegations of municipal involvement or negligence, and establish real oversight and transparency over how these incidents are handled and reported.

04

To: National & Public Health Authorities

Treat this as a public health issue

Recognize poisoning as a public safety risk, not only an animal cruelty issue, and roll out prevention measures and awareness campaigns to match.

05

We’re taking this to national television.

Quiet complaints haven’t worked. So we’re making this impossible to look away from.

Television ads & local publicity

Animals Need Me is launching a television advertising campaign and local press push to bring this issue directly into Albanian homes, and in front of the officials who’ve let it go unanswered for too long. Public pressure is part of how dismissed cases get reopened.

Here’s what actually moves this forward.

01 — Sign the petition

Add your name to our formal demand to Albania’s ministries and municipalities. Every signature makes this harder to dismiss.

02 — Send a letter to officials

Use our pre-written letter, or write your own, directly to the Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Justice.

03 — Share this campaign

Post it. Tag someone. The more people who see this, the harder it is for authorities to treat it as a non-issue.

Stay up to date and never miss out.
